Why Silver Turns Black?

In our daily life, we usually get complaint about silver. Usually in summer season, the silver products turns into greyish black or complete black colour. No matter how good the quality of the metal is. We say our customers, the tarnishing of silver does not mean it is of poor quality. There are number of reasons, that are responsible for turning silver into greyish black colour.

Is it wise decision to buy gold jewellery as an investment?

Everybody loves to buy gold jewellery. The sad reality is, in most of the places, specially in Indian rural places, people buy gold jewellery as an investment instead of buying it as a royal thing. At the time of purchase, people usually ask us about the price if they sell us back to it (which they will not do it) and compare selling and buying price. Most of customers do not buy gold jewellery with this silly reason (in my view). Therefore we always suggest gold jewellery as an investment is never a good option. Gold jewellery is meant to wear as a symbol of royalty just like other things like buying of Royal Royce in car or Rolex Watch. For a jeweller, one handmade ornament, it takes a lot of hard work in days to make one gold ornament. Hence, if you are looking for something to invest, gold jewellery is not wise decision.

One day, one of our customer visited our store with a complaint that his sterling silver bracelet turned into complete black; which he bought few days back. He was angry and scared of being cheated. We talked to him, calmed him down and asked the matter. After some questioning, we got to know, he washed his clothes, with his bracelet on arm, which turned it to black. However later we washed it and bracelet was back to its original shine.

Why Diamond Jewellery Is Made In 18kt Or 14kt Mostly?

Gold is a precious metal and diamonds are equally precious too. Therfore, it is a responsibility of a jeweller to take care of both metal and diamonds while making diamond jewellery. Gold in its pure form is not strong enough to stud diamonds into it. It does not make jewellery durable or long lasting. In order to increase durability of jewellery, other alloys or metals have to be mixed, to make gold stronger. Hence 18kt or 14kt gold is used most of the time to make diamond jewellery.

How humidity can turn silver product into greyish colour?

Most of your customer complaint us that silver turned to black even without wearing it. We always tell them, it is normal phenomeon. They ask us HOW? We answer them due to humidity in air.
Yes, humidity in air, is also responsible for turning silver into greyish black colour. It is so because the silver metal soaks the humidity in air, which leads to silver into greyish black colour.
Precaution: We always suggest two different ways in order to avoid this problem:
  1. Use Air Tight Polythene to store silver product, as it avoids direct contact with humidity. It is the best method. We, as jewellers, use this method to protect our jewellery. Hence, is the most recommended one.
  2. Use sticks of Chalk in the box where jewellery is stored, chalks soaks up moisture from air in box and can protect your jewellery to certain extend.

Why the price of gold vary with location in same state?

If you live in Punjab, India (I decided to quote this location as I live here and usually get query from my customers in this regard). You might wander why the price of one gold ornamnet varies with the location. The price of many commodities, varies with the geographical region. To make it more simpler, in one town you may get bananas according to its weight (Rs.70/Kg) whereas in its neighbouring town you may get bananas in number (Rs.70/dozen). Similarly, pricing of gold and silver ornament varies from area to area. Keeping the base price of 24kt Gold same, the pricing system varies depending upon the ways decided by the market unions or the law or any other factor.

Is it possible to make an ornament of 24kt Gold?

It is one of the question, that confuses a number of customer that IS IT REALLY POSSIBLE TO MAKE AN ORNAMENT OF 24KT GOLD? And the answer is YES. There are certain designs that can be prepared in 24kt gold but it is impossible to make every ornament in 24kt gold. Only a reputed jeweller can tell you, if your design can be prepared or not. The reason behind it is, whenever any other metal alloy is used to make a jewellery, the 24kt purity of metal diminishes. Only a reputed jeweller will tell you, if it is possible to make your design in 24kt or not. We use the word reputed because, in our everyday life, we see a number of cases where customers are misled by jewellers. In these cases, customers play vital role. If you, as a customer, insists the jewellery to make your ornament in 24kt gold, 99% you will be cheated by jeweller and remaining 1% includes reputed jewellers, who straight forward refuse your order.
